Altro XpressLay adhesive-free,Altro Walkway 20
A £25 million new-build academy has installed Altro XpressLay adhesive-free – the world's first adhesive-free safety flooring made by Altro.
Over 1,500m² of Altro XpressLay adhesive-free has been laid in four different colours throughout Kettering Buccleuch Academy's teaching and circulation spaces.
p>Flooring installers, McKenna Flooring, worked collaboratively with main contractors, Willmott Dixon, to deliver this project within challenging site conditions. In order to keep within strict time schedules they needed flooring that could be laid on a substrate that wasn't completely dry.
Project Architect, Darren Jones from Nicholas Hare Architects said: "We originally specified a conventional safety vinyl, but on site we found that the screeds were drying out a lot slower than expected. So as not to delay the programme, McKenna Flooring proposed Altro XpressLay adhesive-free, which was a new product to us. Ordinarily we would have been nervous about laying vinyl on a screed that wasn't fully dry, but the reputation of the Altro brand gave us the confidence to proceed."
Altro XpressLay adhesive-free's unique underside emboss forms tiny air channels which allows any moisture left in the subfloor to escape. This means you can apply Altro XpressLay adhesive-free to a new concrete floor at up to 97% relative humidity, completing the installation more quickly and economically.
"This was great news for us," said Gus Kedzior at Willmott Dixon. "We needed a quick effective turnaround in supply and fit and this product from Altro met our needs. The fact that it is an Altro product also gives us the reassurance that it's good quality."
Richard Adshead, Academy Facilities Manager, said: "The Altro safety flooring will be put through its paces over the coming months as we have thousands of students using our facilities every day of term. That's why the 10 year product warranty is a great reassurance. The chances are that our reception pupils could be walking on the same piece of Altro safety flooring when they are in senior school! As well as meeting all the health and safety criteria it is proving very easy to clean and it is also good to know that it is 100% recyclable post-installation."
In addition, 250m² of Altro Walkway 20 has been fitted in the academy's kitchen. This hugely popular safety flooring is hard-wearing, providing slip resistance and superior chemical and indentation resistance which is great for a busy kitchen environment.
