Issue

Hospitals across Australia are under pressure to meet increasing patient demand while maintaining high standards of safety, hygiene, and compliance. Traditional hospital construction can take three to four years, a timeline that many facilities cannot afford. Even short-term closures of operating theatres can cause significant disruption and financial loss.

A private hospital on Brisbane’s Bayside needed to expand its capacity quickly without compromising on patient care or workflow continuity. They needed a flexible, fully compliant healthcare solution delivered in a fraction of the time of conventional construction.

Approach

Peter Spryszynski and his team at Q-bital Healthcare Solutions deployed modular healthcare units designed to meet Australian standards. Originally developed to British specifications, the units were adapted to local requirements, from power outlets to door fittings, flooring, and infection control standards.

The Q-bital Healthcare Solutions team installed two units elevated one storey above ground level to ensure seamless integration with the hospital’s existing surgical wing. The new facilities were encased in a climate-controlled structure, creating the look and feel of a purpose-built hospital space.

From delivery to completion, the project took just 15 weeks, compared to the three to four years a traditional build would have required.

Key Considerations

Three priorities shaped the design and fit-out of the units:

  • Compliance – Facilities were built to meet strict health facility guidelines, ensuring safety, infection control, and usability for surgical teams.
  • Durability & Maintainability – With hospitals being high-traffic environments, floors, walls, and doors need to withstand heavy use. Local availability of replacements and repairs was critical to minimise downtime.
  • Value & Aesthetics – Beyond cost, the solution needed to deliver long-lasting performance while showcasing a welcoming environment. The inclusion of wood-look finishes and homely design touches reflected the growing focus on patient comfort and staff wellbeing.

Solution

Altro’s safety floors, durable wall sheeting, and door protection solutions were selected because they surpassed the three main priorities, offering compliance, durability, hygiene, local availability, and design flexibility to create a safe environment without a clinical appearance.

The modular solution provided the hospital with additional surgical capacity in record time, without disrupting existing services. The units blended seamlessly with the hospital’s infrastructure, delivering a permanent-feel solution at a fraction of the time and cost of a traditional build.

The ability to mobilise these units quickly, in some cases within a week, has proven invaluable for healthcare providers across Australia. With projects already delivered in four states and more in the pipeline, the modular fleet is helping hospitals expand capacity rapidly and sustainably.
