Saxbys Café

Student run café

Altro XpresslayAltro Cantata

Located at Temple University, this Saxbys Café, a Pennsylvania-based chain of cafés, not only operates as a normal coffee shop, but is entirely student-run with a 22-year old CEO calling the shots.

While the students didn’t make any design decisions, they can serve their colleagues and professors without fear of slips or damage to the floor.

Altro XpressLay and Altro Cantata, our two adhesive-free sheet floors, keep both the kitchen and the shop’s front safe from slips and trips, the former a more industrial back-of-house floor and the latter a smooth floor in a wide range of colors. Installed using a tape system, the two can be installed quickly without the need of messy adhesives.

Saxbys feared adhesives may damage the floor, so a solution without was chosen by design group and architect Eimer Design Studio.

This concern spilled over onto the front of house, and while this typically would have posed an issue, Altro recently unveiled an adhesivefree floor with front-of-house looks in Altro Cantata—in combination with Altro XpressLay, we accomplished both of their needs.

Smith Flooring of Chester, PA, installed the floors.

Part of the Saxbys experiential learning program, Temple University students working at the café take hold of all aspects of running a business, from scheduling and marketing to even ordering product and inventory management. The student-CEO will be receiving college credit for being in charge of the Saxbys franchise.

Thanks to our floorings’ long useful lives, Altro XpressLay and Altro Cantata will ensure this Saxbys remains safe and attractive for generations of young CEOs to come.
