Sheffield, England UK - In 2012, London hosted the Olympic and Paralympic games. Having a monumental event close by led to various Sheffield institutions coming to together and establishing a meaningful and tangible legacy for Sheffield, the UK and the world. The Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park Stadium was built to inspire a stronger, healthier future for the next generation. It is also the only Olympic legacy park ever established outside of a host city. Overall, the park aims to achieve physical and mental health and wellbeing by providing world-class facilities for community sports all the way up to elite, professional levels.
With the need to provide inspirational interiors for aspiring Olympians, architects at Whittam Cox knew that a high-end design, complemented by technical performance and ease of
maintenance was required for the new changing areas, showers and physiotherapy suite.
Architects from Whittam Cox specified Altro Tegulis for the showers and changing rooms, “Ceramic tiles had originally been specified for the showers and changing rooms, but we switched to Altro Tegulis when we realized the installation would be quicker, give a fantastic look and feel to the areas, and provide the cleanliness and hygiene standards required for such busy areas.”
Richardsons Cladding, who completed the installation, also added that, “Altro Tegulis was a quick and easy install which assisted with the contractor’s tight schedule. If this had been done in the ceramic tiles it would have massively impacted the schedule.”
For the flooring in the shower areas, Altro Aquarius was installed. Altro Aquarius is perfect for combined wet and dry areas because it provides slip resistance in areas with common contaminants such as shampoo and conditioner.
For the changing rooms, where traffic from sports cleats and bumps/knocks from sports bags and equipment would be experienced, Altro Atlas 40 was selected. Altro Atlas 40 is Altro’s most robust safety flooring, maintaining its integrity even when superficially punctured by studs or spikes. It’s well suited to heavy-duty industrial use and sports changing rooms that see cleat traffic regularly. Additionally, in the physiotherapy suite, Altro Wood was installed because it provides a home-like and stylish that makes the space feel less clinical.
