Situated on the banks of the picturesque Swan River, St John of God Mt Lawley Hospital provides leading rehabilitation, maternity and specialised medical and surgical services and a boutique hospital experience for people across Perth.
Like many hospitals, St John of God Mt Lawley Hospital is a busy healthcare facility balancing renovations and refurbishments while providing critical medical services to the community. St John of God Mt Lawley Hospital was introduced to Altro in 2014, when their facility management team were experiencing costly and ongoing issues with their patient room bathrooms, which were often out of action for maintenance repairs.
Mark Day, Facility Manager, explains, “Our bathrooms were tiled, and we found that we had water leaking behind the wall tiles causing them to fall off. As these bathrooms are in continuous use, they were constantly in need of repair; maintenance costs were adding up and so were the cleaning costs, as broken tiles and missing grout made the bathrooms harder to clean.”
Mark and his team knew they needed a long-term solution rather than their current ‘band-aid’ fix. They were introduced to Altro’s wall protection and safety flooring by their long-standing contractor, Shaun Duggan, from Ken Marshall Commercial Flooring. Shaun and the team at Ken Marshall Commercial Flooring have worked with Altro products for 18 of years and are Altro Whiterock accredited partners.
Moving away from floor and wall tiles was a significant step for the hospital, so they decided to refurbish one bathroom as a trial. Product selection was a collaborative process between the hospital, contractor and the Altro team.
Altro Whiterock™ wall protection and Altro Pisces™ safety flooring was chosen for the trial space, with a designer selecting a warm colour palette to bring a welcoming, homely, not clinical feel. Altro Whiterock is a proven, high-performance, hygienic alternative to ceramic tiles. Impact-resistant, impermeable and grout-free, Whiterock is easy to clean with no ongoing maintenance. Altro Pisces is a residential-look specialist safety flooring for a “home from home”, warm feel in wet environments; designed for shoe and barefoot spaces.
Feedback from the hospital’s executive team was extremely positive, as was the reaction from patients who used the trial room during their hospital stay, with one remarking that their ensuite looked and felt more like a hotel bathroom than a hospital. The hospital’s cleaning team also praised the trial bathroom, commenting is it was easy to clean and with no tight corners that make cleaning difficult and time-consuming.
Supported by the overwhelmingly positive feedback, Mark and his team moved forward with Whiterock and Pisces and have now completed 50 refurbishments since the trial bathroom in 2015. Both Altro products can be installed over existing sound surfaces, significantly reducing downtime. St John of God Mt Lawley Hospital’s bathrooms were refurbished quickly, in an average of four days. So far, the facility management team have not received any maintenance calls for Whiterock or Pisces.
Mark and his team are thrilled with the durability of Whiterock, which they have now installed as wall protection in operating theatres, waiting rooms and corridors throughout the hospital. These spaces are prone to impact and marking from moving patient beds, equipment and heavy foot traffic. To date, 3170.78m2 of Whiterock, have been installed at the hospital including Altro Whiterock White™, Altro Whiterock™ Satins, Altro Whiterock™ wall designs and Altro Fortis Titanium™ 15.
The partnership continues for St John of God Mt Lawley Hospital, Ken Marshall Commercial Flooring and Altro, as operating theatres and more bathroom refurbishments continue in 2022. As well as an exciting custom walling project that will incorporate biophilia design through Altro Whiterock Digiclad™ and Altro Whiterock™ wall designs.
