Altro flooring and walling are adding drama and showing off their tough credentials in a new restaurant servery and kitchen at the infamous Jamaica Inn, on Bodmin Moor, Cornwall.

Steeped in the history of smugglers, pirates and shipwrecks, the 16th century coaching house made world-famous by Daphne du Maurier’s book and a recent BBC drama boasts 20 en suite bedrooms, an award-winning restaurant, a souvenir shop and a Smugglers’ Museum.

Jon Baines, project manager at South West based commercial refrigeration and catering equipment suppliers KJR, was tasked with designing and delivering a brand new kitchen and restaurant servery for Jamaica Inn.

“The owners of the inn were very clear they wouldn’t compromise on quality, “Jon explained. “I always recommend Altro products, for every job I handle, because time and time again they have proven to be the best for all-round value for money, quality, aesthetics and safety.

“Altro have a superb range of products specifically designed for front and back of house so we were able to select products that perfectly suited the theme, colour scheme and practical needs of the venue.

“Jamaica Inn is a very striking place, and people come here for the drama, atmosphere and history. We needed to find flooring and walling that would complement the gravitas of the site, but also meet the needs of a 21st Century catering and dining operation.

Jon continues. “When it came to selecting the flooring and walling for the kitchen and servery, I sat down with the owners, Altro and the installer, and together we looked at the options. For the kitchen, we decided on Altro Stronghold 30 safety flooring, in the shade Dolphin, and Altro Whiterock White. These two products are a proven and very popular combination for commercial kitchens, because together they provide the ultimate in safety, practicality, hygiene and easy cleaning. They look great, too; very clean and stylish together.”

Aztek Interiors were appointed to carry out the installation. MD John Hudson said: “Adding modern aspects to old buildings like Jamaica Inn demands a great deal of respect and care, and we needed to come up with some creative solutions.

Jamaica Inn is delighted with its new kitchen and servery, which are now both finished and operational. Facilities Manager, Richard Jackson, said: “The flooring and walling make a significant positive impact to the inn, both front and back of house.

“Our new kitchen is a huge improvement on what we had before, and the staff are so pleased with it. We now have a light, bright space which looks great and functions like a modern, practical kitchen. The wall looks superb, very bright and clean and so easy to maintain, with just a wipe down as needed.

“We are very happy with what we have achieved with Altro products in our new ventures, and we are talking to Altro about the flooring and walling options for our other expansion plans, including extensions to the bar and cellar, as well as the new farm shop.”
