Winifred Holtby Academy and Tweendykes School share a big, lively campus that brings together mainstream classes, breakout spaces, and areas designed for students with special educational needs. After years of heavy use, the floors were looking tired and out of place - they were dark, dull, and didn’t match the bright, welcoming feel the school wanted. It was time for a refresh to make the spaces more inviting for everyone who learns and works there.
To ensure the spaces promoted calm and comfort - especially for those with sensory needs - while also delivering safe, smooth, and durable flooring where focus, learning, and confidence could flourish, a collaborative approach was taken. Hull Flooring worked closely with both Altro and the school, consulting on the specific flooring requirements and selecting the most suitable Altro products for each area. This thorough consultation process allowed the team to specify solutions that meet the needs of all users and ensured the installation was carried out seamlessly, with all works scheduled during the school holiday period to avoid disrupting the school day. The phased replacement programme covered an estimated 2,000sqm footprint, ensuring minimal impact on staff and students while transforming the learning environment.
Hull Flooring collaborated with Altro and the school to install a range of high-quality flooring solutions tailored to each area’s needs. Altro Wood Comfort, Altro Orchestra, and Altro Walkway were used to enhance corridors and the atrium with natural style and safety, while Altro Wood Comfort in corridors reduced noise transference in echoey spaces. Altro Illustra was fitted on stairs for slip resistance. All works were carried out during school holidays to minimise disruption, helping to create safer, more comfortable learning spaces where students and staff can flourish.
