Bedford Academy has chosen carbon-reducing flooring for its new-build school extension, opting for Altro Cantata adhesive-free and using the Recofloor vinyl take-back scheme on a project where sustainability considerations were a top priority.

Bedford Academy needed sustainable, durable flooring for its new £12m extension, a high-traffic environment with strict carbon and waste reduction targets set by Bedford Borough Council and Ashe Construction. The project required materials that supported long-term sustainability without compromising performance.
Ashe partnered with Altro to identify low-carbon flooring options. Altro recommended Altro Cantata adhesive-free flooring for the communal spaces and Altro Aquarius for wet areas, alongside introducing the Recofloor recycling scheme. Recofloor bins were placed on site for efficient offcut collection, and Altro’s Sustainability Champions visited mid-project to support the build’s net-zero goals.
The extension was completed with Altro Cantata and Altro Aquarius, delivering durable, low-maintenance, sustainable flooring. Through Recofloor, 0.85 tonnes of vinyl offcuts were recycled, saving an estimated 1 tonne of carbon.
The approach reduced waste, supported future recyclability, and aligned the project with the council’s and contractor’s sustainability ambitions.
Altro Cantata adhesive-free is an adhesive-free floor designed for quick installation and minimal disruption. Its cleanability and lack of adhesive odours make it ideal for busy public spaces, and it can be easily lifted at end of life for reuse or recycling.
Altro Aquarius is a safety floor for wet and dry areas, suitable for both shoe and barefoot use. It provides slip resistance against common contaminants and offers long-lasting comfort and durability
