Nestled in the suburb of Rocky River, Ohio—home to 20,000 residents and bordered by Lake Erie and the Cleveland Metroparks—Rocky River High School has built a reputation for excellence, earning the highest Performance Index score among all Ohio high schools in 2022 and 2023. This dedication to high standards extends beyond academics and into every aspect of the school’s facilities, including their newly upgraded commercial kitchen. Originally designed in 1949, the school’s kitchen had remained largely untouched, using the same plans for over 70 years.
Recognising the need for a modern, functional space, ThenDesign Architecture set out to create a kitchen that would match Rocky River High School’s commitment to innovation and long-term planning. Moving away from traditional quarry tile, and opting for more modern finishes, they selected Altro Stronghold 30 safety flooring and Altro Whiterock wall cladding to provide a seamless, hygienic solution.
Altro Stronghold 30 was chosen for its exceptional slip resistance, ensuring a safer environment for staff working in wet or greasy conditions. Its 3mm thickness eliminated the need for antifatigue mats by providing comfort underfoot and reducing noise. Altro Whiterock was recommended by the flooring contractor, Messina Floor Coverings, during installation. The school embraced the upgrade for its hygienic, impact-resistant surface, creating a clean, modern look. Thermoformed outside corners and heat-welding between the wall panels further enhanced hygiene and durability.
Altro Whiterock Satins is a colourful and tonal, satin finish wall sheet with all the hygiene and durability of Altro Whiterock. Versatile and sophisticated, vary the mood to soothe or stimulate. Great in wet environments, wards and kitchens.
Altro Stronghold 30 achieves Altro’s highest rating for slip resistance (PTV ≥55, R12) and is designed to minimise risk in wet and greasy conditions for the lifetime of the flooring. As well as helping to keep staff safe from slips, it also helps reduce their fatigue, thanks to its 3mm thickness which provides noise reduction and comfort underfoot.
