Spartanburg High School in South Carolina, USA, was converted from the old Lan-Yair Country Club, combining elements of both traditional and contemporary design. A symbol of the desegregation of Spartanburg City Schools, the design objective was to surround students with timeless reminders of the school’s historic past, while allowing them to benefit from modern design concepts that promote 21st-century teaching and learning.
Situated on a 189-acre campus, the facilities feature an outdoor environmental classroom, multiple walking trails and ponds, courtyards and open areas, as well as an athletics stadium. The interior of the school buildings needed durable safety flooring that prioritised robust slip resistance and comfort. Local architect firm McMillan Pazdan Smith (MPS) collaborated with Altro to ensure the best performing flooring products were selected for a range of different areas in the school.
For the school’s busy kitchen, MPS specified Altro Stronghold 30 for its tough durability, high performance safety credentials and comfort underfoot for hardworking feet. Altro Reliance 25 was installed in other back of house areas where a durable, hard-wearing floor was needed. Altro Pisces provided assured slip resistance and a homely feel in the toilet areas.
Altro Stronghold 30 achieves Altro’s highest rating for slip resistance (PTV ≥55, R12) and is designed to minimise risk in areas exposed to grease, oils and fats. Its 3mm thickness provides noise reduction and comfort underfoot.
Altro Reliance can cope with high levels of foot and wheeled traffic without compromising on its PTV ≥40 slip resistance and provides additional comfort underfoot.
Altro Pisces achieves Class B to DIN 51097 for barefoot use, plus a Pendulum Test Value (PTV) of ≥50 (Slider 96). Altro Pisces offers 16 soft-look shades and performs whether wet or dry, in shoes or barefoot.
