The newly refurbished Alnwood building at St Nicholas Hospital facilitates the provision of older people’s services with a fully modern design orientated around dementia. The building has Inpatients and Outpatient units with two wards of 10 mixed-sex beds, and one Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) bedroom with ensuite. The building was very dated and not adaptable to the patient group and needed to be made as homely as familiar as possible.
NTW Solutions Ltd, part of the Cumbria, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust Group worked alongside the DSDC ensuring the building was refurbished and adapted for dementia patients, particularly around LRVs and providing familiarity with fixtures and fittings while maintaining reduced ligature risk. Alnwood needed to be an environment that was fit for the patient requirements.
“Using a flexible product like Altro Whiterock in ensuites meant we could create a mirror backed with Altro Whiterock that could be reversed if required for client need – avoiding any dementia related issues with reflection – and a false toilet cistern, creating familiarity of a more domestic bathroom.” Danni Littlewood, Capital Projects Officer, NTW Solutions Ltd.
Altro products were used throughout, providing a consistent finish, integrating wayfinding and co-ordinated spaces. Altro Pisces, Altro Whiterock White, Altro Whiterock Satins and Altro Tegulis were used in bathrooms and ensuites to create a safe, durable, watertight system.
