Hospitality projects can often lead to overwhelming challenges of choosing the right flooring. New construction projects will have different requirements and obstacles than existing occupied projects. Before you specify a hospitality project, you need to do your homework. Each project is unique and can have special requirements based on facility type, customer expectations and time constraints.
These unique requirements are each important and can make a significant difference in the immediate and long-term success of the floor.
Flooring, wall covering, substrate preparation and adhesive selection:

Selecting the right flooring and adhesive for the application is a critical first step in any project but even more so for commercial kitchens applications. Commercial kitchens and restaurants have their own set of challenges since flooring replacements will generally be more frequent.
When creating these spaces, you need to make sure that everyone from the Executive Chef to the four-year-old sitting down for lunch is safe. But, before you select your flooring, wall protection, substrate prep and adhesives, you need to know what type of abuse the floor will be subjected to.
New Construction:
It is important to know what you are getting into before you start the project. Concrete curing compounds, admixtures, sealers, bond breakers and deicers can all create problems for resilient flooring. Some of these products may require additional substrate preparation to remove or control them. Monitoring the ambient temperature and humidity during acclimation all the way up to occupancy is critical.
Topically applied slip-resistant particles, such as epoxy paint or resin, can wear away through everyday use. Altro’s safety flooring technology, with its aggregate throughout, will ensure your floor’s slip resistance will remain for the entirety of the product’s life.
We recommend using an integrated safety flooring and durable wall protection to provide a long-lasting and safe surface even when wet, dusty and greasy conditions exist. As the inventor of safety flooring, we take slip resistance seriously. All our ranges are rigorously tested for slip resistance values using multiple techniques and tests, such as the PTV Pendulum Test, Ramp Test and James Machine.
Qualified labor:
Remember not all installers have equal skill levels. Commercial kitchen installations should be done by Altro Kitchen Advantage trained installers to ensure the highest quality and compliance with construction standards. Regular inspections and repairs by these experts help prevent costly issues, such as flooring failures or water damage, ensuring the kitchen remains safe and operational.
Environment:
Every area has its own unique set of challenges. Large hospitality projects can take a long time to complete. This means that the project may start in the spring and continue through winter or longer. Each season will bring on new challenges, which in some areas can be significant.
Maintenance:
Your responsibility for the floor does not end when the floor is completed. Improper maintenance can create issues with even the best flooring installations. It is important that you provide the project with the proper care and maintenance of the flooring product being installed. This should include proper cleaning methods, cleaners, and finishes. You need to know the specific maintenance requirements for the type of facility you are working in. These requirements can vary from state-to-state or even county to county.
Some of these aggressive cleaning methods may stress the flooring in unforeseen ways. Proper cleaning is essential to keeping a facility hygienic no matter which interior finishes are selected. We highly recommend that a cleaning and sanitizing program is created specific to your facility that utilizes the resources and products as recommended by individual manufacturers.
