Where safety feels like home: Designing for our aging population

As North America's 65+ population continues to grow, architects and designers are challenged to create environments that balance residential aesthetics with the durability and performance required in senior living.

Today's senior living communities are moving away from institutional-feel like design. Instead, they're embracing spaces that feel welcoming, comfortable, and familiar while quietly supporting health, independence, and confidence.

As we age, changes in vision, hearing, balance, and cognition can make everyday environments more difficult to navigate, increasing the risk of slips, falls, and disorientation. Thoughtful design helps address these challenges by creating spaces that are intuitive, supportive, and comforting, allowing residents to move through their day with greater confidence.

Four ways to make safety feel like home

  1. Guide residents with color and contrast

Thoughtful use of color and contrast helps residents distinguish between floors, walls, doors, and fixtures, improving orientation while reducing the risk of trips and falls.

The FGI Guidelines recommend at least a 30-point difference in Light Reflectance Values (LRVs) between adjacent surfaces, helping ease visual deficits common with age.

  2. Bring the comforts of home into every space

Safety shouldn't come at the expense of comfort. Wood-look flooring, calming color palettes, and thoughtfully selected wall finishes create inviting interiors that feel familiar while meeting the demands of commercial healthcare environments.

Flooring solutions like Altro Wood, Altro Wood Comfort, and Altro Wood Acoustic deliver the warmth of residential design with durability, acoustic benefits, and performance senior living communities require.

  1. Protect residents without compromising design

High-risk areas like bathrooms, kitchens, and spas require dependable slip resistance, but they don't have to interrupt the overall design aesthetic. Flooring such as Altro Aquarius provides lasting slip resistance in wet environments, helping protect without feeling overly clinical.

  2. Choose materials built for everyday care

Residents of senior living facilities are already at a higher risk than the rest of the population of contracting an infection due to age and increased vulnerability to illness. Maintaining a clean, healthy indoor environment is essential to supporting resident wellbeing and providing peace of mind for their loved ones. That's why Altro Easyclean Technology is built directly into our flooring during manufacturing, making it easier to clean and maintain without compromising the sustained slip resistance our products are known for.

To create a complete hygienic interior, pair Altro flooring with Altro Whiterock or Altro Whiterock wall designs. Together, they provide durable, easy-to-maintain surfaces that support rigorous cleaning routines while helping senior living communities maintain warm, welcoming environments.

By combining thoughtful color selection, residential-inspired aesthetics, slip-resistant flooring, and durable finishes, architects and designers can create communities where safety feels natural, independence is supported, and every space truly feels like home.
