Altro provides wall cladding for state-of-the-art hydrotherapy facility

Altro Whiterock Chameleon, Altro Whiterock

Located north of Toronto, Canada, Kayla’s Children Centre (KCC) is a school, therapy clinic, and recreational centre for children with disabilities, behavioural challenges and complex medical needs.

The newest addition to the KCC is the Mayim Aquatic Centre. This state-of-the-art hydrotherapy centre, the only fully accessible pool in the area, fills an urgent need for the region. Swimming is a recreational activity enjoyed by so many, but for people living with disabilities, access to a therapeutic pool provides more than a leisurely pastime, it is a truly life-changing experience.

KCC worked with G architects in Toronto to bring the concept of this innovative building to life. Designed for children, the aim was to create an exciting and inviting place that was both safe and hygienic.

Familiar with Altro’s wall cladding, G architects specified Altro Whiterock Chameleon for its bright aesthetics, hygiene and durability. They kept the colours in the pool, floor and ceiling neutral which allowed the high gloss of Altro Whiterock Chameleon to really pop.

Phil Goodfellow, Partner at G architects commented that, “in a high humidity, high moisture environment, we needed wall cladding that would look nice but also could stand up to the demanding environment. Having a full encapsulated watertight system, that worked with the specified flooring, helped manage humidity, upkeep and cleanability.” G architects specified Altro Whiterock Chameleon in a variety of colours throughout the facility including pool surrounds, change rooms, wet areas, locker areas, and assisted bathing areas. The wall cladding was installed by Kente Leckie Flooring company.

“We also liked the ability to thermoform around corners and extrusions. This eliminated the need for corner guards, which is something we were trying to get away from as these can be a hazard for children. For this project we had a lot of specific details and we made sure to use an Altro Whiterock Elite Partner trained installation company for the labour. While this is always important, having the right installer in a wet environment like this one, is critical.”

The facility opened in late 2022. For years, KCC clients were transported to hydrotherapy pools in other communities. Bringing a state-of-the-art hydrotherapy Centre to the area has been a labour of love for all involved, knowing that an entire community of people with disabilities will have access to this highly specialized, centre of excellence.
