Hellesdon Rivers Centre, Hellesdon Hospital, Norwich

Issue

The Rivers Center at Hellesdon Hospital is a $55 million behavioral health facility designed to provide a therapeutic and supportive environment for mental health patients. The campus includes three newly constructed inpatient ward buildings that were co-designed with patients to prioritize safety, dignity, and privacy in alignment with national healthcare guidelines.

Approach

From the outset, materials were required to meet strict technical and sustainability standards, while also supporting reduced ligature design principles. Integrated Health Projects, a joint venture between VINCI Building and Sir Robert McAlpine, partnered with architects Murphy Philipps, Elite Interiors, and Blade Flooring to deliver a facility that would meet both stringent technical specifications and long-term performance expectations.

Solution

A range of Altro flooring and wall solutions was specified throughout the Rivers Center to support safety, hygiene, and durability.

Altro Illustra in Skyfall was installed in circulation corridors, patient bedrooms, and communal areas to provide secure underfoot performance with a calm, contemporary aesthetic. In seclusion rooms, Altro Illustra adhesive-free in Warm White was paired with Altro Whiterock in Blush to deliver a hygienic, reduced ligature solution designed for safety and ease of maintenance.

In patient ensuite bathrooms, Altro Aquarius in Lighthouse was combined with Altro Whiterock in Promenade to ensure dependable slip resistance and long-term durability in wet areas.

Throughout the remainder of the facility, Altro Whiterock in Blush, Fawn, Cesco, Flint, Mint, White, and Promenade were installed across ensuites, seclusion suites, kitchenettes, and laundry areas. Altro Walkway 20 in Blizzard was selected for kitchen spaces to provide additional slip resistance in higher-risk zones.
