Sarnia, Ontario, Canada - Pathways Health Centre for Children is a vital community resource in Lambton County, providing essential services to children and youth with physical, developmental and communication needs.
As the only therapeutic pool in Sarnia, the center offers aquatic therapy to clients, their families and the local community. The Pathways therapeutic pool supports rehabilitation, developmental therapy and overall well-being with a 20’ x 60’ design and depths ranging from 3’ to 5’.
With safety and durability in mind, Pathways selected Altro Marine 20 for the pool surrounds renovation. The decision was driven by the center’s long-standing satisfaction with Altro Marine 20, which had been in place for over 20 years. The existing installation had exceeded performance expectations, providing excellent safety and minimal maintenance.
Specifically designed for wet barefoot environments, Altro Marine 20 features a dimpled surface that enhances slip resistance while maintaining comfort underfoot. Given the pool’s role in serving individuals recovering from motor vehicle accidents, hip and knee replacements and children with neurodivergent or physical needs, the flooring’s slip resistance was a key factor in ensuring a secure and accessible environment for all users.
The project presented unique challenges, including transitioning the new flooring to existing mosaic tiles at the pool and spa edge. Additionally, standard drains needed to be replaced with clamping drains to ensure secure installation.
The Altro team collaborated with the general contractor and end-user to facilitate these modifications. To minimize disruptions, Altro and the installers worked closely with Pathways, allowing pool programming to continue with minimal impact.
