Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro (Treliske) is the biggest hospital in Cornwall, providing emergency and specialist healthcare. The Emergency Department is based at Royal Cornwall Hospital alongside critical care facilities, high-tech operating rooms, maternity services, cancer care, pain clinics and a wide range of outpatient services from eyes, ears and skin to specialist therapies. There are also excellent education and training facilities.
With a hospital of this size, it is not surprising that the corridors are busy and well used 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The hospital corridor needed updating and required a durable solution to withstand the high footfall and wheeled traffic in the area. Additionally, there was limited time to install a new floor and wall system, so the hospital needed a quick to install floor.
Duncan Clift, Estates Project Manager from the RCHT Estates Department at Royal Cornwall Hospital, said: “I had been informed there was a new product coming to the market that had all the benefits of Altro XpressLay. I have had reservations about using Altro XpressLay in the past, that it would move and cause problems. I decided that this was the area to try Altro Cantata. If it stayed in place here, it would stay in place anywhere around our hospital.
“The installation went smoothly and it looks great. Most importantly, it doesn’t move and stays in place even with wheeled traffic.”
Nathan Campling, Eden Flooring & Interiors, installed Altro Cantata and wall protection. “Altro Cantata is easy to install and has a lovely finish,” he said. “It’s perfect for hospitals, schools and anywhere you need a fast-track solution. The support from Altro was excellent as always.”
Altro Cantata is a decorative, adhesive-free floor that creates maximum impact with minimum downtime. Using Altro’s awardwinning adhesive-free installation method, it can be welded and walked on the same day, and removed easily at the end of its life, allowing it to be reused or recycled.
Altro Cantata is easy-to-clean and maintain, and will retain its looks for the lifetime of the floor.
The hospital chose complementary shades of gray for floors and walls, coordinating Altro Cantata with wall protection, to create a sophisticated and aesthetically-pleasing environment.
Duncan concludes: “The main benefits are that with so many changes around the hospital this gives us the opportunity to salvage and reuse the flooring in other areas. It is also easier and quicker to carry out repairs around the hospital without the need for adhesive – just cut out the bad area and weld in a new bit. I also like that it is more environmentally friendly and can be fully recycled. We are now looking to replace the whole of our main corridor with this product, but the color will be Altro Cantata Wicked so it works with the green theme of the Trelawny building.”
