Altro Symphonia, Altro Whiterock
Highland, Indiana’s Veterinary Orthopedic Center (VOC) is a unique veterinary care facility founded with the intent of providing focused orthopedic surgical services for its friendly four-legged patients. While limited to strictly small animal orthopedics, VOC specializes in diagnosing and alleviating the pain associated with underlying causes using a combination of medical treatments, physical therapy and surgery. The facility’s comprehensive approach to veterinary care even includes state-of-the-art rehabilitation techniques, notably its use of canine aqua treadmill therapy to improve core strength and mobility post-procedure.
Selecting the most effective flooring surface is a key priority when designing pet-friendly interiors. Sharp nails, shedding and the occasional “accident” can negatively affect different flooring types. In VOC’s case, their ideal surface would also need to offer ample underfoot comfort to accommodate animals with weakened or aging musculoskeletal systems that require supplementary support. This led to a collaboration with local architect firm Farr Associates and VOC’s regional Altro representative when the time came for renovations.
Farr specified Altro Symphonia smooth flooring for use throughout the facility’s entrance, exam rooms, treatment areas, orthopedic ORs and kennels. Designed to bridge the gap between smooth and slip-resistant flooring, Altro Symphonia provides patrons and staff with proper traction underfoot to prevent them from tripping and falling as they move between areas. This range is also significantly more forgiving on paws, bones and joints than traditional polished concrete or tile floors, and boasts impressive stain and chemical resistance capable of enduring frequent cleaning regiments without fading or discoloration.
To complete their renovations, VOC paired Altro Symphonia with Altro Whiterock wall cladding in the form of wainscotting for the facility’s treatment rooms and orthopedic suites. These highly durable, impact-resistant wall panels provide a continuously smooth surface without gaps or grout in areas where hygiene and cleanability are critical. Designed to integrate with Altro flooring using a seamless, watertight joint, Altro Whiterock allows for truly thorough cleaning and disinfecting without the threat of moisture or bacteria accumulation over time.
