General

Altro acoustic underlay 1101 is suitable for use with Altro safety flooring, Altro rubber flooring and Altro smooth flooring. When tested in accordance with BS EN ISO 140-8.1998 the combined product meets the requirements of Approved Document E, Resistance to the passage of sound, July 2003 and BB93 Acoustic Design of Schools (min requirement 17dB).

Size

Altro acoustic underlayment is supplied in rolls of 36m long x 1.15m wide x 3mm thick.

Storage

Altro acoustic underlay should be laid in accordance with the Code of Practise BS 8203:2017. The material should be stored for approximately 24 hours at a room temperature of not below 18°C. When laying, the area should be a steady temperature of between 18°C and 27°C for at least 48 hours prior to, during and for at least 24 hours after completion. The material should be checked for any possible faults prior to laying and should be conditioned before adhering to the subfloor for a minimum of 2 hours. The material should be cut into lengths and laid loose for conditions.

Subfloor

The subfloor must conform with the requirements of BS 8203:2017 and must be dry, smooth, clean and free from any contamination libel to impair adhesive.

Adhesive

Altro acoustic underlay should be fully adhered to the subfloor using the adhesive selected from the following guide:

Altro safety flooring to Altro acoustic underlay
(in areas subjected to spills)
Altro acoustic underlay to subfloor
AltroFix 19 Plus
Altro safety flooring to Altro acoustic underlay (no spills)
Altro acoustic underlay to subfloor
A15 or a suitable pressure sensitive adhesive used in accordance with adhesive manufacturer’s instructions. Note that Altro Acoustic 1101 must be placed into the adhesive whilst wet.

Laying

The underlay can be laid in either the same direction or at 90° to the surface material, but with the joints not corresponding, we recommend that the underlay is adhered to the subfloor with the face side up as it is rolled out. The joints and perimeter can either be cut in before or after applying the adhesive.
This will depend upon the preference of the flooring installer, however, it should be borne in mind that in large installations if the joints and / or the perimeter has been cut in, any movement of the sheet whilst replacing it into the adhesive may create a problem.
Turn the material back and apply the selected adhesive to the subfloor in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.
After the specified open time, which can depend upon the subfloor, place the floor covering back into the adhesive pushing out any air bubbles. Remove any excess adhesive immediately using a damp cloth and depending upon the adhesives used (refer to Altro’s adhesive data sheets) rolls the whole area with a floor roller both width ways and length ways. Once the underlay has been fully adhered to the subfloor it should be left until the adhesive has set before the application of the surface material (refer to Altro’s adhesive data sheet).

Protection

During the period of time from the installation of the Altro underlay until it is overlaid with the surface material, the underlay should be covered and protected from all other trades with a suitable nonstaining protective covering.
Note: All resilient floor coverings, when installed in conjunction with an underlay are prone to increased indentation from point loading. Please consult Altro where such conditions exist.

Health and Safety Advice

Before using any adhesive, users should refer to the SDS (Safety Data Sheet) for correct safety advice and to determine the level of PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) and RPE (Respiratory Protective Equipment) that is required. A COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health) assessment and risk assessment should be carried out before using this adhesive.
In the case of contact with eyes or skin, rinse immediately with plenty of water and seek medical advice.
