Two areas of Chelsea and Westminster Hospital were undergoing expansion and refurbishment to create modern and welcoming facilities that support and provide the highest possible quality of care for patients, visitors and staff. The Saturn unit provides care for children and young people undergoing day surgery, when they do not need to stay in hospital overnight before or after their operation or procedure. The Adult Therapy Department provides high-quality patient care with state-of-the-art rehabilitation equipment and was being relocated from the ground floor to the lower ground floor.
Owing to lack of natural daylight, the CW+ Arts Team wanted to create a light, bright space with a connection to nature in the Adult Therapy Department while offering a better working environment for staff. The artwork brief focused on the biophilic theme, and the Therapy team were keen for the designs to incorporate local nature. The resulting works by printmaker Clare Halifax, feature Battersea Park and riverside, Kyoto Gardens in Holland Park, and Chelsea Physic Gardens.
After consultation with users, children and families, a key priority for the Saturn unit was to create a calm environment with opportunities for distraction including inspiring and immersive spaces. The CW+ Arts Team commissioned illustrator Jonathan Woodward to develop a cosmic theme enabling patients to embark on a space journey, mirroring the experience of an astronaut from the moment they arrive.
