Next generation vehicles need next generation flooring. Kinchbus chose Altro flooring for its new sprint vehicles; 11 buses delivering a 100% clean, green public transport service and marking the first phase of the company’s transition to a fully fossil fuel free fleet.
Kinchbus, based in Nottingham, planned to replace its Loughborough University Sprint and Campus Shuttle routes with new Electric Vehicles. This upgrade created an opportunity to completely rethink the vehicle interiors with a passenger focused, holistic design approach. Traditionally, buses are assembled with limited consideration for how elements like seating, flooring, handrails and windows work together. Kinchbus aimed to create a home from home environment that balanced aesthetics with functionality. After attending the Altro Transport neuroinclusive design focus group in early 2025, the team partnered with Altro to install flooring that met safety requirements while creating a welcoming, sensory friendly space that subtly incorporated their brand.
Kinchbus specified Altro, and together they immediately began consultation with neurodivergent passengers, whilst partnering with other interior manufacturers, to identify potential pain points when it comes to existing bus interiors. What challenges they face when boarding, travelling or exiting a bus. Altro’s extensive background in the built environment, producing floor solutions for health and care spaces gave confidence to the Kinchbus team that the outcome would be a space that put inclusivity first.
Kinchbus selected Altro Transflor Artis, Farmhouse Oak for its flooring. A lightweight, thermal and acoustically insulative flooring – ideal for energy conservation in terms of heating the vehicle and able to combat against the unique frequency produced by electric vehicles. From an aesthetic point of view, Farmhouse Oak is a light, natural looking wood, ideal for creating a light, airy, warm and welcoming environment. Typically, lighter colours have not been specified inside buses due to concerns around dirt showing up on its surface. However, with the introduction of Altro ShieldGrip technology, operators can confidently specify lighter, design‑led finishes without compromising on practicality, allowing them to prioritise the look and feel of their interiors.
Altro Transflor Artis is a compact, durable floor covering with permanent slip resistance rated to class R10 (PTV>36). Available in a range of contemporary designs inspired by wood, weave or mineral surfaces, it can be flexibly integrated into a wide variety of vehicle and interior concepts. The innovative ShieldGrip technology supports fast and reliable cleaning, ensuring the floor remains hygienic, safe and visually appealing even under intensive use.
We really enjoy working with Altro – their neurodiversity focus group opened our eyes to inclusivity, and its importance. Because of Altro we now we feel much more equipped to create neuroinclusive bus interiors. The finished product is perfect. It’s exactly what we wanted, and the customers will love it.
