Working together with our Sustainability Manager, David Lever, the students rolled up their sleeves and got creative, designing and constructing their very own bug hotels.
These compact, eco-friendly structures provide shelter for pollinators and natural pest controllers, which play an essential role in supporting biodiversity in gardens and green spaces.
“This project not only brought our community together but also highlights how important it is to teach kids about being kind to the environment,” said David Lever.
The activity was a brilliant example of learning by doing.
As Lorraine Yates, SENCo/FSW, from Northfields Infants & Nursery School put it:
“Sustainability is a big deal these days, and what better way to learn about it than by doing something hands-on. By building bug hotels, the children got to understand how important biodiversity is and how insects play a crucial role in our ecosystem.”
Anna Jones, Year 5 teacher from The Grange Academy echoed the enthusiasm:
“These cool, sustainable structures give a safe spot for beneficial bugs like pollinators and natural pest controllers, which are key to keeping our gardens and green spaces healthy.”
To top it off, the bug hotel designed by Northfields Infants & Nursery School was entered into the RHS Go Wild campaign - part of the RHS Hampton Court Palace Garden Festival - where it featured in a family-friendly area encouraging wildlife and biodiversity.
At Altro, we’re passionate about doing more than just talking about sustainability - we want to put it into action. This project is a fantastic example of how local businesses and schools can collaborate to inspire the next generation of environmental champions.
We’d like to say a huge thank you to both schools for their creativity, energy, and commitment to protecting our planet. It's projects like these that remind us how powerful education and community can be when they come together for a common cause.
