Universal Bus concept wins Platinum ADCA award for innovative inclusive design

Altro Global Transport is celebrating following the announcements that their Universal Bus concept collaboration with industrial design firm Neomind, has been named the Platinum Winner 2025 in the Public Transportation & Mass Transit Category of the prestigious Architecture Collection (ADCA) Awards.

The recognition of the ground-breaking design follows the concept’s successful launch at the Busworld Expo in Brussels, where its innovative, human-centred approach to urban mobility drew widespread industry attention.

The ADCA Platinum Award validates the Universal Bus concept's outstanding design quality and adaptability, positioning it as a new worldwide benchmark for truly inclusive and sustainable public transport.

Reimagining the passenger experience

The Universal Bus fundamentally re-engineers the bus interior to make inclusivity, accessibility, and comfort central to every journey. The design strategically introduces distinct, intuitive spaces that directly cater to real passenger needs.

Key features include:

  • A dedicated quiet zone for passengers seeking a less stimulating environment.
  • A family area designed to make traveling more engaging and easier for children.
  • Clearly marked priority seating to ensure passengers with specific requirements feel safe and supported.

Reducing barriers for neurodivergent passengers

The design consciously addresses specific challenges often faced by neurodivergent passengers, such as visual over-stimulation, anxiety, unclear information, or discomfort from noise and temperature.

Key barrier-reducing elements include:

  • Intuitive information: Large, easy-to-read passenger information screens are placed throughout the bus, providing real-time updates at a glance to build confidence for every traveller.
  • Enhanced atmosphere: Acoustic and thermal insulation was integrated to significantly reduce background noise and aid temperature regulation.
  • Supportive materials: Specialised finishes were used to create visual clarity and tactile warmth, resulting in a welcoming, balanced, and supportive space for everyone on board.

Reaction to the win

Chris Edwards-Thorne, Marketing Manager for Altro Global Transport, expressed pride in the achievement: “Winning this Platinum ADCA award is fantastic, especially because it validates our core mission: using materials to create truly inclusive public spaces. The concept isn't just about safety and durability; it's about how our products enable the creation of those calm, supportive environments. The quiet zones and the clearer pathways make a massive difference, especially for neurodivergent passengers. It proves that human-centred design is the future of transport”.

Kasia Foljanty, Director of Customer Experience at Neomind, highlighted the concept’s wider implications: “We really wanted to challenge the status quo with the Universal Bus. It’s no longer enough just to move people; we have to move them comfortably and confidently. By designing distinct zones such as the Quiet Zone or the Family Area, we are ensuring every type of passenger is catered for. This Platinum award sends a clear message that inclusive design, focused initially on removing barriers for neurodivergent users, ultimately creates a better, more attractive journey for absolutely everyone”.

The Universal Bus sets a new benchmark for mobility design, demonstrating how a focus on inclusive design can drive meaningful innovation in the transport sector. Its environment removes barriers, builds confidence, and invites everyone to travel.
