Altro Transflor Chroma safety flooring has been fitted in a large fleet of Abellio buses operating in and around London.
Abellio operates more than 600 buses to deliver over 80 routes across central, south and west London and Surrey from five depots.
The fleet is fitted with Altro flooring comprises 31 new single deck Enviro 200s, plus 45 double deck Volvos and Enviro 400s, which are being refurbished.
Abellio’s Fleet Engineer, Richard Gilmore, said: “I have worked with Altro before and always been very impressed with the quality, performance and ease of maintenance. When it came to selecting safety flooring for this new and refurbished fleet, we had no hesitation in specifying Altro.”
The Altro Transflor Chroma flooring chosen was 2.2mm thick, with a color scheme of red on the bus step entrance and central floor aisle, with grey to the sides under the seats.
Altro Transflor Chroma vinyl flooring is a tough, popular range that performs at its best in high density, inner city traffic. It boasts first-rate dirt-hiding properties, making it perfect for urban vehicles and coaches.
Altro Transflor Chroma adds real style to interiors; a choice of multi-chip colors enhance the broad palette, harmonizing with livery or branding. This highly resilient PVC flooring features safety as standard. Incorporating a quality wear layer, it is manufactured from silicon carbide and aluminum trioxide grains for slip-resistance, enhancing passenger safety.
Richard Gilmore added: “The new buses are now in service. The flooring looks very smart indeed and is performing well. It is also easy to clean and maintain, which is a major factor, especially with the extremely hard and wet winters we’ve been having in recent years. Altro flooring cleans up like new and can withstand dirt and water over many years.
“The safety aspect is also a vital factor, and we have total confidence that passengers have the best flooring underfoot, even in the harshest conditions. Going forward, we will ensure that all our new buses are fitted with Altro flooring.”
26 of the Volvo vehicles are being refurbished by Truck Align. General Manager Paul Crow commented: “We do a great deal of work with Altro. They have some excellent products on the market and some new ones under development. They really understand the needs of the bus market, so they are a great company to work with.
“Refurbishing the fleet of Abellio buses is quite complex. Removing the old flooring can be tricky and involves using a heat gun to melt the glue and loosen the flooring. Once that’s up, it takes around one week to install the new flooring on each bus.
“It’s the stairs on the double deckers that take the time, and the welding between the two types of flooring has to be watertight to prevent moisture getting in. Each bus uses around 75m² of flooring in total. Altro Transflor Chroma is a great product to work with, very pliable and easy to handle.”
The remaining refurbishments are being carried out by Alexander Dennis Ltd. Wayne Allen, the company’s Service Workshops Commercial Manager, said: “We had only been working with Altro since early 2012, but we were very keen to get involved with them because they demonstrated very effectively that they could deliver competitive, high quality products to the bus market.
“They are committed to product development and investing in the market and that’s very healthy for the whole industry. Our experience with them so far has been very positive, and on the Abellio project we have had great service from them, and I know the client is very happy with the results.”
