Centralia, Washington, USA - Oak Cottage at Maple Lane is Washington state’s first decentralized mental health care program, supporting an initiative to transform behavioral health services statewide. This behavioral mental health (BMH) facility dedicates itself to creating a patient-centric healing environment that places the utmost priority on safety
In BMH facilities, bathroom and shower areas are high-risk zones because patients may spend time alone with minimal or no supervision. BCRA Design desired a floor and wall solution for these areas that prioritized tamper resistance, safety, and durability. Their objective was to implement a system that eliminated the need for trim pieces or sealants while seamlessly integrating with the floor covering. Through a collaborative effort with their local Altro representative, BCRA Design ultimately specified Altro Whiterock and Altro Aquarius.

BCRA Design chose Altro Whiterock for its durability, impact resistance, hygienic properties, and ease of cleaning. With its impressive impact resistance Altro Whiterock ensures that it can endure the stresses of potentially aggressive behavior without chipping or cracking. Furthermore, Altro Aquarius was selected for its lasting performance in wet environments and ample slip resistance, making it the ideal choice for patient bathroom and shower areas.
To increase safety in these higher-risk areas Maple Lane opted to install BestCare® Ligature-Resistant Drain by Whitehall Manufacturing. These clamping drains designed to work for vinyl flooring are secured with tamper-proof screws that can only be loosened using a corresponding specialty tool or by removing the screw heads entirely. Additionally, the drain cover is designed with an internal gusset system to prevent ligature points.
Together, Altro Whiterock and Altro Aquarius enable Maple Lane to facilitate treatment while prioritizing the safety and security of patients, visitors, and staff across all bathroom and shower areas.
