The concept – developed as a response to the challenges faced by neurodivergent passengers – has been created in a collaboration between Altro Global Transport and renowned German design house Neomind.
The innovative interior addresses the needs of the UK’s estimated 9.7 million neurodivergent individuals – equivalent to 15% of the population.
Zoning is a critical element in making the Universal Bus a space for all. The priority space is thoughtfully laid out for those who would typically be considered as priority passengers. This space includes a calming blue finish, complete with guide dog space and wheelchair area.
Also included in the concept is a quiet space, designed for passengers who may experience overstimulation during public travel. The zone that includes single seats is complete with windbreakers which have variable transparency and frosted glass to increase privacy.
The family space is an idea unique to the Universal Bus. Complete with adjustable seating, fidget stimming apparatus and flexible layout, this communal space is ideal for those travelling together or with children.
Zoning is a significant step towards creating an inclusive bus interior, but without appropriate wayfinding these benefits can be lost. The Universal Bus concept uses floor signage to communicate clear messaging to passengers to enable wayfinding.
The materials used in development of the concept have been sympathetically selected to benefit neurodivergent people. Muted tones and natural elements including wood-effect vinyl, off-white seat shell, felt, frosted glass, and powder-coated aluminium.

This significant recognition highlights Altro's commitment to neuroinclusive design, as the concept competed against innovative entries from across the mobility sector following its debut at the Transport Design Forum 2025.
